Friday – 9-5 & Saturday – 8-4

White County will be accepting applications for the position of Convenience Center Operator. This position is a Part Time position averaging 17 hours a week – to cover Center hours on Friday 9a-5p & Saturday 8a-4p. JOB SUMMARY

This position preforms maintenance and customer service duties at a solid waste convenience center.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Opens, operates, and closes the convenience center on assigned days.
  • Monitors the disposal of waste items and recyclables for compliance with guidelines.
  • Collects fees and completes daily activity reports and bank deposits.
  • Performs grounds maintenance activities, including sweeping, picking up litter and debris, and maintaining the office.
  • Provides assistance to the public with unloading waste and recyclables.
  • Educates users and provides information regarding acceptable materials.
  • Communicates with supervisor when solid waste containers are full of in the event of citizen non-compliance.
  • Ensures that users are residential and not commercial customers.
  • Follows safety guidelines.
  • Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of customer service principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of prohibited and accepted materials.
  • Knowledge of county and department safety rules and regulations.
  • Skill in the use of basic hand tools.
  • Skill in the provision of customer services.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Public Works Director and Assistant County Manager assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include county and department policies and procedures.  These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related duties in support of convenience center operations.  Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.

  • The purpose of this position is to assist customers at a solid waste convenience center. Success in this position contributes to the provision of solid waste and recycling services to the public.

  • Contact are typically with other county employees and members of the general public.
  • Contact are typically to provide services or to give or exchange information.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping.  The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects and using tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. 
  • The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read, write and preform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one or two years. 

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
